The eye starts developing on the 22nd day of gestation.
The human lens is first anatomically visible at 3 to 4 weeks of gestation.20 By the 5th week the lens separates and infection in the mother would no longer cause cataracts in the lens.
Cataracts can be diagnosed by high quality ultrasound as early as 11- 14 weeks.
The technician will look for high echogenic ring (“hyperechoic”) areas of the lens using a high quality ultrasound. Not all technicians are trained to know what to look for.
However, the inability to see cataracts during testing does not mean they are not present or won’t develop shortly after birth. Anecdotal accounts from families with hereditary cataracts report that is a frequent occurrence.
